5 Senses June
An exploration of what I'm noticing, enjoying and returning to lately.
I began my own version of Jeremiah Brent’s 5 Senses here on my Substack last month, because it really is such a beautiful way to capture a moment in time.
Here is June’s 5 Senses.
Taste:
I recently discovered Mesquite. When I googled more on Mesquite this was what I got: “Mesquite coffee is a naturally caffeine-free coffee alternative made from the roasted and ground seedpods of the Mesquite tree. It brews into a smooth, rich and naturally sweet cup with notes of cocoa and caramel. It provides steady energy without the jitters or acidity of traditional coffee.”
This has been a wonderful addition to my Winter and both my husband and I love it. We make it home and order it out. It’s a bonus that it comes with such great health benefits too, besides just enjoying the taste and warmth it brings.
Besides the no caffeine, it is gut friendly and low acidity. It is highly alkaline and makes it gentle on the stomach - an ideal choice for anyone prone to heartburn or indigestion.
It’s nutrient dense: The pods are packed with plant-based protein and essential minerals, including potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, and zinc, supporting both muscle function and cardiovascular health.
It’s naturally sweet, so you don’t have to add sugar or sweeteners. It’s difficult yo explain but it has a naturally nutty, cocoa and caramel flavour profile.
The next time you’re at a coffee shop, order a Mesquite (pronounced Mes-keet) and let me know what you think.
Touch:
I’m currently working on a new product to add to my beauty company Bailey G. It’s not another make-up brush cleaner, but it is a new solution to a problem I have.
Whilst I hate being cryptic, the reality is I just can’t share yet.
Eye roll, I know.
It’s been quite the journey. Something I thought would take quick, has turned into almost a 9 month + process. In fact it’s turning into a timeline longer than a pregnancy, so I guess you can say this is the new baby.
I had the idea and thought: Let’s get this done. I thought it would be a month to 6 weeks. Super straight forward, right?
Wrong.
It’s turned out to be a lot trickier than expected.
Anyways, how annoying to read this and still not know what I’m actually talking about.
Back to why it’s touch, is because I have been touching and feeling everything that goes into this process.
I’m still not 100% happy and while I know things don’t always have to be perfect to launch, I also know to trust my gut. This isn’t right yet and when it is right (not perfect - although that would be a lovely bonus), you’ll be the first to know.
In the meantime, here’s a pic of my award winning solid make-up brush cleaners. I hope you’ve added one to your beauty and skincare regime. Not yet? Shop here: www.baileyg.co.za
Sight:
The 2026 World Cup.
I am really enjoying it and I think what’s made it even more special, is that my two soccer mad boys really get it now. Four years ago, during the last World Cup, I had a two year old and an almost five year old. They were just a little too young to understand what all the excitement was about.
This time has been different.
We’ve guessed scores, cheered at our TV and and had our hearts broken watching Bafana Bafana go further than they ever have in a World Cup. They played so well against Canada, only to be knocked out in the final minute.
The time zones have made things interesting and as a Mom, I’ve had to get creative.
I know everyone has complained about the hydration breaks but, before the school holidays, they became my secret weapon. If there was an earlier match that the boys could watch but it would still push bedtime too late, I’d tell them they could watch until the hydration break and then it was straight to bed.
The next morning, the deal was that teeth had to be brushed, school bags packed and everything ready before they could watch the highlights.
Now that it’s the holidays, bedtimes have become a little more flexible and honestly, I’m not mad about it.
These are the moments they’ll remember. Curled up together on the couch, the fireplace going, cheering, celebrating, feeling the heartbreak and watching stories and dreams unfold.
Those are the core memories that matter.
Sound:
I created a playlist on Spotify after seeing some inspiration on Pinterest. I don’t know if it’s all the summer content I’m seeing in the Northern Hemisphere or craving a night out, but I created Bailey’s Cocktail List. Think old school cool meets main character moment. This is for dancing in the kitchen, golden hour drives and parties that refuse to end at a reasonable hour.
You’re welcome to enjoy it here: Press Play
Are there any songs that should most definitely be added? Leave a comment with your suggestions.
Smell:
Warm, fluffy pancakes sprinkled with cinnamon sugar and finished with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice.
I know this could easily fall under taste, but for me it’s the smell that stays with me. My boys absolutely love them and they’re one of those simple things I can whip up in no time.
There’s something about the warm scent of cinnamon sugar as the pancakes cook that instantly fills the house with comfort.
I hope you’ve had a wonderful month and thank you for reading & subscribing! Leave a comment won’t you?
